That's Genre-tainment!

Hosts Julie and Marx Pyle interview me on their popular Internet radio program, Genre-tainment today, at 7:00 pm.  We share a wide-ranging conversation involving remakes, re-boots, superheroes, horror films, and even my "cult" sci-fi web series The House Between (2007 - 2009) -- soon to be made available on DVD and streaming for the first time.

Check out the show here!  You can either listen to it live, or wait for the program to archive.   Julie and Marx are great hosts -- and they have also produced the  web series Reality on Demand -- so I'm hoping to recruit for them my (eventual) new web production, The Eclipse, in some capacity...

John as I type this comment I have been listening your live interview and enjoying the discussion. This would be great if it was a weekly event for you. I agree with your opinion regarding STAR TREK needed to be rebooted back to it's roots of the original series and the Kirk era. My favorite era is the Kirk era of the original series, the animated series, the first seven movies and the J.J.Abrams Star Trek movies too. I loved your segue to SPACE:1999 discussion. I too do not want to see a Ron Moore Battlestar Galactica version of Space:1999, let's hope the creators of the new Space:2099 reboot follow a J.J. Abrams approach. I am sorry to hear that on the playground your boyhood peers played only Star Trek or Star Wars. I was fortunate enough to have had several boyhood friends in the '70s who wanted to play Space:1999. I even made crude wooden sets of four Stun Guns and four Commlocks. I even talked my Mother into buying four plain beige with colored long sleeves[only] boy-size baseball jerseys: black[my Koenig], red[my friend's Paul/Tony], yellow[another friend's Alan Carter] and white[a girl friend's Helena who later wore red to be Maya]. John great interview, always keep us posted about any future interviews.

    1. Hi SGB,

It really means a lot to me that you found the time to listen to the interview, and then to return here and comment meaningfully on it.

My feeling about Star Trek is that I want it to be there for my son, as it was for me. I feel it is a modern myth with tremendous value (and morality) and it deserves to translate to our next generation. I feel that the first step in making that translation successful is again to make the concept entertaining and exciting...something 1990s Trek often failed to do. The J.J. Abrams film was very good, I felt, and a good start and successfully translating the myth. I hope the sequel follows up on that fine and important work. I feel that Trek is in good hands. I hope to be watching it as an old man, watching my grown son (and his son and daughter, perhaps...) watching the latest adventures of the starship Enterprise.

As you know, Space:1999 is my all time favorite. I have great memories of it as a kid, and I did have a wonderful friend who "played" it with me on the playground in kindergarten, thankfully. I was always John Koenig and he was Alan Carter. Occasionally my older sister would show up to play Maya...

Excellent comment, and again, it means a great deal to me that you listened to the show.

      All my best,
      John
